"Best players in the Premier League" - Carragher admits he was wrong about two Arsenal stars

Jamie Carragher has admitted he got it wrong about two Arsenal stars, speaking on the most recent edition of The Overlap Fan Debate.

With 12 games remaining, the title race is really starting to take shape, and Mikel Arteta's side are still setting the pace, sitting four points clear of Manchester City, despite dropping two points against Brentford in their most recent Premier League outing.

The Gunners are still competing on all fronts, securing progression to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 demolition of Wigan Athletic, which means the games are coming thick and fast, and the second North London derby of the campaign is now on the horizon.

Arsenal's upcoming Premier League fixtures Date

Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) February 18th

Tottenham Hotspur (a) February 22nd

Chelsea (h) March 1st

Brighton (a) March 4th

Everton (h) March 15th

Having finished in second place three seasons on the spin, the north Londoners' mentality has been called into question at times, but Carragher has suggested Arteta may actually have a different problem.

The Sky Sports pundit said: "People talk about their mentality – I actually think Arsenal have great mentality. But there problem could be a lack of quality in the final third.

"When I watch Arsenal, I don’t think they’ve got an absolute superstar in the front four or five players. I thought Saka and Odegaard were going to get there a few years ago.

"I thought they were ready to almost become the best players in the Premier League. I still don’t think Arsenal have got one of them.

"So people talk about mentality with Arsenal but what I think could actually stop them [in the title race] is actually quality."

Saka and Odegaard need to step up during run-in

Having been the 'bridesmaid' on three occasions, Arsenal need to finally get over the line this season, which means Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka need to step up, with the latter failing to score in his last ten Premier League appearances.

In fairness, Odegaard is hitting form at the right time, picking up one goal and four assists in his last eight league games, but it is concerning the Norwegian's strike against Brighton was his first goal of the campaign in all competitions.

That said, while some criticism is warranted, the Gunners are top of the table, with an historic quadruple still on the cards, and Arteta has plenty of other attacking options who are capable of making a difference in the final third.

Arsenal dropped points on the road to Brentford on Thursday evening.

Gabriel Jesus has performed well since returning from a long injury lay-off, netting five goals in all competitions, while Viktor Gyokeres bagging a brace in the 3-0 victory against Sunderland is encouraging, so Arsenal should definitely have enough to go all the way.
