“Only a miracle” – Goalkeeper sends clear message on Wolves reality

Wolves goalkeeper José Sá has delivered a brutally honest assessment of the club’s situation in the Premier League, admitting survival looks almost impossible.

In quotes relayed by O Jogo, the 31-year-old acknowledged Wolves are bottom of the table with nine points and sit 18 points adrift of safety with 12 matches remaining. As a result, he believes only a “big miracle” would keep them up.

“We have to be realistic and we have to be men”, he said. “I’ve already spoken with the manager, I like to be honest and that’s what I think. It’s very difficult for Wolverhampton to stay up this season, the gap is very big. There are 12 games left and it’s a very big distance. Only a huge miracle would see us stay up.”

Instead, Sá has set a different short-term target inside the dressing room – avoiding the unwanted label of worst team in Premier League history. The record currently belongs to Derby County, who collected 11 points in the 2007/08 season.

“What I’ve told them is: at least let’s not be the worst team in Premier League history”, he stated. “The worst team got 11 points, we have nine. The objective now is not to be the worst, because I don’t want to be left with that negative historical record. Then we’ll see.”

Squad limitations acknowledged

Sá did not shy away from criticising the squad depth either. He admitted Wolves lack both numbers and quality compared to most Premier League sides.

“We have to be realistic, our squad is short for the Premier League, in terms of quality and players. That’s the reality.”

Still, he insisted he tries to keep spirits high in difficult moments. “I try to be a cheerful person, because I am cheerful and calm”, he said. “I try to lift them. It’s about winning as many points as possible so we’re not the worst team in Premier League history.”

With 12 matches left, Wolves need at least three points simply to surpass Derby’s total. Whether they can close the far bigger gap to safety looks unlikely on Sá’s own admission.

For now, the focus inside Molineux appears far more modest – avoiding a record nobody wants to own.
