West Ham wanted to sign “special” 28-year-old Liverpool star in January

West Ham had a busy January, bringing in five new faces to try and spark a survival push.

Taty Castellanos, Pablo Felipe, Adama Traoré, Axel Disasi, and Keiber Lamadrid all arrived at the London Stadium. Everyone apart from Lamadrid – who has yet to make his debut – has made an immediate impact, with Disasi perhaps standing out the most.

But the Hammers nearly added a sixth signing to the list – one that would have turned a few heads.

According to Calciomercato, West Ham had their sights on Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa during the winter window.

The Italian attacker – described as “special” by Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker – has netted three goals and contributed three assists in 27 appearances this season.

The Hammers were looking for extra attacking firepower, but Liverpool reportedly refused to sanction a sale unless they first secured a replacement.

In the end, West Ham went for Adama Traoré, who brings Premier League experience and familiarity with manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

Chiesa, still searching for regular minutes at Anfield, is expected to move on this summer, and West Ham could revisit their interest if Liverpool soften on their €15–20 million valuation.

It didn’t happen in January, but don’t be surprised if West Ham make another attempt to lure the 28-year-old Italian to east London. With his quality and experience, he could be exactly the kind of spark the Hammers need next season.
