**Despite their current predicament, West Ham’s recent FA Cup run has gotten some Hammers fans excited.**
The Irons are into the Fifth Round of the cup after beating Burton Albion 1–0 in Round Four last weekend and have drawn fellow top-flight side Brentford in the last 16.
It is the first time that West Ham have gone this far in the cup since 2023, when — after beating Brentford in the Third Round — they lost to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
That has often been the case with West Ham in recent seasons, with unfavourable draws thwarting cup runs. Even after beating both Manchester clubs in the 2021/22 season, the Irons lost away at Spurs in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, and have faced Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa in cup competitions over the last three seasons.
However, although high-flying Brentford are likely the favourites going into the next-round tie, this seems like a match that an in-form Hammers side could actually win — and the draw has made some West Ham fans question their priorities on social media.
Of course, the Irons are still in a relegation scrap, with Championship football next season very much a possibility. But the Hammers’ current cup run has some supporters dreaming — and, even worse, losing sight of what is most important this season: Premier League survival.
In fact, a small handful of online fans have even admitted that they would sacrifice their club’s top-flight status if it meant silverware in May — a truly baffling sentiment.
Even if West Ham were to lift the cup come May, relegation would almost certainly make the triumph futile. European football is of little benefit to a club if they are a second-tier side, and the joy of cup success would likely be cancelled out by the despair of the drop.
Indeed, if Nuno Espírito Santo’s side can keep up their momentum and ensure safety before the final few games of the season, then a cup run should become the priority. But for now, the Hammers must focus on maintaining top-flight status before dreaming of domestic glory.
