We covered earlier that Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães travelled back to Brazil to continue treatment on his thigh injury. Now, fresh reports have added detail to how that recovery is unfolding – and what comes next.
ESPN Brazil reports that the 28-year-old is working at Atlético Mineiro’s training centre. He is recovering from a grade three injury to the posterior muscle of his left thigh.
Local journalist Pedro Ivo Almeida first revealed the problem. Doctors expect him to miss around eight weeks.
Newcastle United and Brazilian FA align on recovery plan
This is not an informal arrangement. Newcastle agreed a plan with the Brazilian FA (called CBF) before approving the trip. Guimarães is working under Rodrigo Lasmar, who serves as Atlético Mineiro’s and Brazil’s national team doctor.
Medical staff considered surgery because of the severity. However, they chose a conservative route. Guimarães will stay in Brazil for about a month. He is spending his first week in Belo Horizonte under Lasmar’s supervision.
ESPN’s Bruno Andrade has now detailed the next step. After this initial spell at Atlético Mineiro, Guimarães will move to Rio de Janeiro. There, he will continue treatment at Botafogo’s facilities. Newcastle and the CBF have approved that stage as well. The process is clearly coordinated.
Next step in Rio de Janeiro
Andrade explained that Guimarães will spend seven to ten days in Belo Horizonte before travelling to Rio. The midfielder also works with a private physiotherapist. That specialist stays in almost daily contact with Newcastle’s medical department.
Newcastle have not stepped back from the situation. Instead, they have authorised the player to complete rehabilitation in Brazil while maintaining close supervision. The club remain informed about each phase.
The injury rules Guimarães out of Brazil’s March friendlies. Those matches are the final fixtures before the World Cup squad announcement. Even so, many in Brazil still expect him to feature in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for June.
From Newcastle’s perspective, the priority is clear. They want their midfielder back fully fit and without long-term risk. Guimarães has delivered one of his strongest seasons, with nine goals and six assists in 2025-26 so far.
The focus now rests on execution. Multiple clubs, national team staff and private specialists are involved. Newcastle will judge the process on one outcome – a safe and complete return to action.
