In hugely competitive midfield, Alex Scott's form should boost England call hopes

While the 22-year-old did not feature in either game in that international break, for those who had watched the Cherries this season were not the least bit of surprise that he was included in the squad.

It was, perhaps, a good time for Scott to get his first senior call up.

Tuchel has previously called players up and not played them in their first camp with Jarell Quansah and Nico O’Reilly, and both have since been capped.

The November squad was the penultimate squad that Tuchel will name before his World Cup squad.

If Scott is included in the Three Lions squad in March for two friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley, then he will surely be odds-on to make the final World Cup squad.

And his recent form has done nothing to suggest he won’t be in contention.

Tuchel has a number of options in midfield. Declan Rice is likely a shoo-in to the side as one of England’s stand out players in the number eight, while there are options for the German alongside the Arsenal midfielder.

Elliot Anderson, Jordan Henderson and Adam Wharton have been inclusions in squads under Tuchel and the England boss may go for three of those four including Scott for his final squad.

There may be late bolters for the squad like Kobbie Mainoo who has started the past five games for Manchester United after he struggled for minutes under previous United boss Ruben Amorim.

Anderson and Wharton are currently operating in below-par Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, while Scott has been at the heart of a Cherries side that have recently found their form once again.

Tuchel seems to like having Henderson in the squad as an experienced head and he has been getting decent minutes in the Brentford team that is performing well.

But does the England head coach’s recent contract extension trigger something of a change in his selection policy, that could benefit Scott?

Tuchel’s remit when he arrived was to take England into the World Cup, and no further.

But his new deal will see him take the nation into the 2028 Euros, a home tournament, for which Henderson almost certainly won’t be available for, as he’s currently 35.

So, could Tuchel pick the younger group of midfielders of Scott, Anderson and Wharton, with an eye on the future too?

Rice has plenty of experience in midfield, and he’ll definitely be available for the Euros in two years, but Tuchel then may go for that younger trio to give them senior tournament experience – and that is not to say they are not ready to go now, they are all hugely talented players.

If he is to pick on current form, then Scott has got to be towards the top of the tree to be in the side.

The Englishman has been a key part as Bournemouth have turned their recent form around, earning man of the match nods in the Wolves and Aston Villa games.

He has been hugely impressive in the recent run and has been a clear stand out with Cherries fans, scoring against Newcastle in the FA Cup and Wolves in the league while providing an assist in the Liverpool win.

I think Scott’s versatility in midfield can help him, with the 22-year-old able to play in the six and ten roles as well as the eight role he is primarily deployed in.

It is a hugely competitive battle for the midfield berths for England.

But Scott will hope, with his foot potentially already in the door, that Tuchel has been watching his performances with the Cherries and has been as impressed as the Bournemouth faithful.
