“Date in mind” – Director on injured West Ham player’s return, explains ‘complex case’

West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez hasn’t enjoyed a good run since joining Fenerbahçe on loan in the summer.

The midfielder has played 17 matches in all competitions for the Turkish club as fitness and injury concerns restricted his minutes.

He played three matches in this calendar year, and the West Ham man’s last appearance was on February 2nd. The Mexico international has been struggling with an ankle injury, forcing him to spend time away from the pitch.

West Ham player undergoes surgery

On Tuesday, Sport Witness covered claims from Mexico that Fenerbahçe and the national team specialists have monitored him. The same source explained Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will make the final decision on whether he will go under the knife.

It seems like the Hammers have made a decision as the 28-year-old underwent surgery yesterday.

The West Ham owned player took to Instagram to confirm his surgery and is now focusing on his recovery.

AS in Mexico report he should be on the sidelines for around two months.

World Cup not in danger for Álvarez

TUDN had a chat with Mexico sporting director Duilio Davino to discuss Álvarez’s current situation.

There’s been concern in Mexico over his involvement for the World Cup and Davino has given assurance of his availability.

“In Edson’s case, we’ve been supporting him; in fact, someone from the national team is with him there today. It was a successful surgery, and we already have the medical report,” he said.

“The doctor who operated on him assures us firsthand that he’ll be at the World Cup if nothing serious comes up. We have to keep an eye on things.”

When asked about Álvarez’s return date, Davino explained: “We can’t comment on that. We have the date in mind based on what our doctors say. We know that the information has to be released by the player or his club, and often the doctors allow a few extra weeks to avoid any unforeseen problems.”

The national team official explained West Ham’s involvement made the case complex.

“It was a complex case because he has a contract with Fenerbahçe. West Ham owns his rights, so they have to be involved in the decision regarding his health. The player was experiencing ankle pain, and we’re on track to have him back in top form, as he is our captain today,” he added.
