Everton dismissed Rafa Benitez in January 2022, as he left the Toffees just six points above the relegation zone.

Since leaving Finch Farm, Benitez has managed Celta Vigo and is now the current boss of Greek outfit Panathinaikos.

Although, the former Toffees boss is now at risk of the sack.

Former Everton boss Rafa Benitez could be sacked by Panathinaikos after just four months

According to journalist Konstantinos Lianos, Panathinaikos are considering sacking Benitez four months after hiring him.

The Greek Super League giants are 16 points adrift of league leaders AEK Athens, and they aren’t even in the top four.

Benitez’s side reside in fifth place, and Lianos believes the Spaniard is struggling to win over the dressing room.

Panathinaikos players are said to be ‘frustrated’, so the board are reportedly giving him two more games against Viktoria Plzen and OFI Crete before making a decision on his future.

It has also been mooted that a former Liverpool player is being lined up as his potential replacement.

What did Rafa Benitez say about his short Everton tenure

Speaking to Sky Sports after leaving Everton in 2022, Benitez said he struggled to make certain decisions because of his Liverpool past.

“At the time Everton came in with the offer, I knew I would give my best and do everything to try to improve things,” he stated.

“I knew it could be difficult because I was at Liverpool, so maybe I couldn’t make some decisions. It was very clear for us at the beginning.

“I had a meeting with a head of one of the departments and I asked him ‘do you think everything is fine?’ He said ‘yeah, everything is perfect.’ I thought ‘£600m had been spent, it cannot be perfect when the owners aren’t happy and the fans are not happy.

“So I realised we had to change things inside, but I couldn’t do it straight away because I was a former Red and it could be seen as ‘oh, he’s come in to change our club’.”
