‘I understand…’ - Ben Jacobs shares what he’s been told about 'outstanding footballer leaving…

Newcastle are open to selling Nick Woltemade in the summer transfer window, GIVEMESPORT understands.

Woltemade only arrived at St James' Park in the summer in a club record £69million deal from Stuttgart - effectively as a replacement for Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool in a British record £115million transfer.

But just one year on from signing him, the German could be moving on again.

Woltemade hit the ground running in the north east, smashing four goals in his first five appearances in the Premier League. He would go on to score three more times in his next nine matches, to make it seven goals in 14 matches in his first season in England.

However, the goals have dried up since then, with the 24-year-old failing to hit the back of the net since and he has been a substitute in six of the Magpies' last eight matches in the top flight.

Woltemade was involved in something of a war of words after he signed for Newcastle, with Bayern Munich having also been in the race to sign him. However, the price tag saw them pull out of any deal and Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rumenigge said: "I congratulate Stuttgart, because they found an idiot who paid the money we didn't want to pay in Munich."

GIVEMESPORT understands that Newcastle are open to selling the German international in the summer, but that they would expect to recoup as much, if not all the £69million they shelled out on him.

Senior GMS correspondent Ben Jacobs said: "My understanding is that in the summer, Newcastle and Woltemade will indeed hold some conversations to determine the best path forwards and that Newcastle are actually open to a sale.

"Newcastle are prepared to factor in the player's perspective and any off-field acclimatisation as well and there could be a possibility of a departure during the summer.

"Newcastle are at least open to that scenario, even though they continue to feel that Woltemade has further room for improvement.

"But there will not be a willingness to make a significant loss because any departure will still have an impact on the club, even though as we head into the summer, Profit & Sustainability Rules are changing to Squad Cost Ratio and several clubs will have a little bit more financial rope to work with."
