Mitoma says he must produce more as Albion eye return to winning form

The winger is demanding more from himself and his team as they bid to return to winning ways.

The Seagulls have two victories in 15 league and cup games and have slipped into the bottom half of the Premier League table ahead of Saturday’s trip to in-form Brentford.

Mitoma, who scored at the Gtech Community Stadium last term, would love to help turn fortunes around with a first away win in the league since the end of November.

He has intermittently shown what he can do since returning from injury but has not hit heights on a consistent level.

Mitoma said: "I haven't been playing the way I want to.

“Even with the back-to-back games, I need to make more of a difference.

“I need to play well in the next game and do my best. I feel like my performance wasn't good enough.”

Mitoma spoke after a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa, which was followed by FA Cup exit at Liverpool in which he went on as substitute and looked quite lively.

Albion’s travelling fans stuck with their side in those two games following ugly scenes at the home defeat by Crystal Palace.

Mitoma told London-based Japanese media: "I understand the feelings of the supporters, and I know that things aren't going well for us. We have to endure this.

"We haven't been getting results, so I think the booing was justified.

“We're a team that needs to go higher, but we're in this situation.

“If we don't earn points, it will be tough. Can we hold on in these situations? Our strength is being tested.”

Albion need goals from all areas after three successive blanks and Mitoma scored at Brentford last season after moving into a central area with no recognised strikers on the pitch.

Seagulls head coach Fabian Hurzeler will give an update on his squad and speak about the challenge posed by Brentford when he speaks to media on Friday.

Key decisions could include a return to the starting XI for Mitoma, Danny Welbeck and Yankuba Minteh while Mats Wieffer will be pushing for a greater role after briefly returning from injury at Anfield.
