Newcastle United are keeping tabs on RB Salzburg youngster Edmund Baidoo, who continues to impress in the Austrian Bundesliga.
That’s according to Africa Foot. According to their information, his performances have attracted the interest of Newcastle this season.
The outlet reports that, according to sources close to the 20-year-old, Newcastle’s board have made contact with Baidoo in recent days. The Magpies would reportedly like to sign the Ghanaian ‘prodigy’ next summer.
Edmund has been attracting interest from several clubs, including Borussia Dortmund. Newcastle are in the mix too and ‘inquired’ about him in recent days. They have even begun discussions with Salzburg regarding a potential transfer.
Newcastle would pay €10m
The Austrian side are ‘very attentive’ to the interest. They’re ‘demanding’ a fee of around €10m. Newcastle are said to be willing to pay that amount. But they still need to discuss contractual terms with the youngster’s representatives.
The positive for them, is that a transfer is ‘not out of the question’. That’s according to a source close to the player. For now, he remains focused on finishing the season strongly with Salzburg.
He joined them in 2024 and has scored 12 goals and six assists in 58 games since. He also has two goals and three assists in seven games for their youth side.
A €10m fee would represent a tidy profit for Salzburg given they paid €3.3m to get him 18 months ago.
Newcastle’s long-term plans
The question is whether Newcastle see him as ready for the Premier League now or as a future prospect. The latter seems more likely.
He could even be a replacement for William Osula. He’s been linked with a move away from the club since last summer.
Eintracht Frankfurt are particularly keen, something Sport Witness have covered extensively since last summer.
The German side even tried again in January, only for Newcastle to hold things up. The Bundesliga club could still pursue a return in the summer. Perhaps that is why the Magpies now have their eyes on Baidoo.
