Ronald Koeman has received a warning to act quickly to prevent the Netherlands from losing West Ham United star Crysencio Summerville.
Soccer News cover comments from journalists Valentijn Driessen and Jeroen Kapteijns today. The pair believe Summerville should now be in the Netherlands team.
Summerville has been the undisputed star of the show for West Ham this season, particularly under Nuno Espirito Santo.
West Ham’s star man
The 24-year-old has very much stepped up after a disappointing first season at the London Stadium last year. He only managed one goal and two assists in 22 games last season, with less than 1000 minutes on the clock.
This season he’s on six goals and four assists in 23 games and 1755 minutes already. It’s rapid improvement across the board, to say the least. Indeed 2026 has been a fruitful year so far as he’s managed four goals and one assist in seven games.
The 1-1 draw with Manchester United was the first in which he drew a blank since the 3-0 loss to Wolves on January 3rd.
He’s yet to play for the Netherlands, though. The West Ham star has played for them at every level from U16 to U21, the last appearance coming back in 2021.
There have been suggestions he could be a surprise inclusion, which Sport Witness covered back in January. That was before his current run of form.
Suriname efforts
In the background are Suriname, who he’s also eligible for, to push for him to change allegiance officially for the World Cup. That would be a shame, according to Driessen, who is a big fan.
“He’s a player who’s doing fantastically at West Ham; he scores goals like crazy. Koeman has to look at that, and you shouldn’t just let him go,” he said. Fellow journalist Kapteijns, though, believes it may be too late for any effort.
“It will be too late; he’s already made his choice for Suriname,” he added.
“If he makes the play-offs, he’ll simply go to the World Cup. He’ll make his debut in March when Suriname plays against Bolivia and perhaps Iraq.”
