Leeds United’s recruitment since promotion has been largely effective as we sit six points clear of the relegation zone.
To bridge the gap from the Championship to the Premier League, Leeds required a seriously good summer window under the 49ers.
£100million later and it’s fair to say the vast majority of Leeds’ investment has been a success so far. A six-point gap to relegation is a sign of our progress.
Leeds United’s Lukas Nmecha onto seven goals and two assists for the season after FA Cup strike
Within that £100million summer spend, the first signing of the summer was a free transfer. Lukas Nmecha joined from Wolfsburg after his contract expired, and looked to be something of a gamble, given his injury record.
However, Nmecha proved his shrewd value from the off, getting us off the mark with his penalty in game one at home to Everton. Since then, he’s steadily chipped away with regular goals, especially since the shift in formation under Daniel Farke.
His strike at Birmingham City, arguably the best of the lot, was his seventh of the campaign in all competitions, on top of two assists as well.
Leeds United legend Eddie Gray impressed by Lukas Nmecha signing
You’d have been forgiven for knowing very little about Nmecha before joining. He wasn’t exactly tearing up the Bundesliga ahead of his move to West Yorkshire, having enjoyed one truly prolific campaign on loan at Anderlecht in 20/21.
Leeds legend Eddie Gray has been very impressed by Nmecha this season. He believes that the striker fits perfectly into the ‘athletic’ side that the 49ers and Farke have built.
“[Nmecha] has been terrific as well,” Gray told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. “You don’t know much about these players until you see them in the flesh and he’s been terrific, a big asset for our club.
“I think the thing about the players Daniel has got is they work very hard. The midfield players are up and down the pitch, strikers are making great runs off the ball, the defenders are strong. They’re all good athletes, they get around the pitch.”
Lukas Nmecha proving to be strong Leeds United signing for free in the summer
It was never going to be a signing that got fans incredibly excited. That said, in terms of squad building, Nmecha has been great.
Yes, there’s plenty of room for improvement, and he’s not nearly as good a focal point as Dominic Calvert-Lewin. But, he’s been more than good enough for us.
At the end of the day, you can’t argue with seven goals and two assists from 906 minutes. He’s more than justified his transfer.
