Aston Villa could see a long-time stalwart exit for a return to his homeland this summer
An update surrounding the future of Lucas Digne has emerged, amidst recent reports that the 32-year-old could be set to depart Villa Park.
The Villans have continued their high-flying Premier League form but may look to strengthen in key areas in the summer, if they hope to establish themselves as one of the division’s elite sides. This might mean securing a replacement for Digne, amidst recent reports that Villa are ‘expected to replace’ the former Everton and Barcelona defender, who will be 33 in the summer and could return to Ligue 1.
Lucas Digne exit latest as Lille ‘dream’ of move
According to reports by Sport Witness relaying information from Media Foot in France, Lille ‘dream’ of signing Digne this summer and are planning a swoop for their former academy graduate at the end of the season.
Digne began his career at Lille, making 62 appearances for the first team before departing for PSG in 2013. The 55-cap France international has enjoyed a glittering career and is expected to be welcomed back with open arms at his former side.
Digne is under contract at Villa Park until 2028, originally signing for £25m from Everton in 2022, and has made 30 appearances this season. Any deal between Villa and Lille is believed to be in its early stages with advances yet to be made, though reporting continues that ‘the idea of homecoming is in the works’.
The player’s agents, French agency Classico, could also play a role in the move after the player recently changed representatives. It is believed that a return to Ligue 1 might be favoured by the company, who could be the ‘driving force’ behind a move.
With Lille and the player’s agency reported to be keen on the transfer and Villa believed to be open to a summer exit for Digne, updates are set to arise as to whether this prospective move could become a reality in the coming months.
