Huddersfield Town legend and former Leeds United player Roy Ellam dies as supporters pay tribute

Huddersfield town and its supporters are mourning the loss of one of the club’s much-loved former players.

Roy Ellam, who had two stints with the Terriers during his playing days, has sadly died at the age of 83. Born in Hemsworth, the defender represented Huddersfield Town during the 1960s and 1970s.

The club announced the news of Roy’s death on social media. They posted: “Everyone at the club was saddened to learn of the passing of Town great Roy Ellam, earlier this week, at the age of 83.

“Our collective thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. Once a Terrier, always a Terrier.”

Many supporters have offered their condolences and left tributes in memory of Roy. Rob Barker said: “Such a lovely fella. I loved listening to him talking about his footballing days with Frank Worthington and Norman Hunter at the pub which he ran in the 1990s. Thanks for the memories Roy.”

Roy finished his playing career with Gainsborough Trinity - a club which he also managed. Many supporters would love to hear stories from Roy’s football career when he ran the Nelson Inn, in Thornhill Lees, near Dewbury, between 1983 and 1992.
