Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon opened up about their disagreement

Newcastle United pair Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier have opened up about

Gordon, 24,, firing four first half goals to get one Newcastle foot into the Round of 16. Two of his goals came from the penalty spot, and the second after he was brought down by Qarabag goalkeeper Mateusz Kochalski.

However, after the latter, Trippier and Gordon appeared to have a fierce exchange of words on the pitch, despite Gordon scoring the fastest ever Champions League hat-trick from an Englishman. Trippier was unhappy the ex-Everton forward did not let him take the second penalty.

When the whistle was blown for half time, nothing but smiles would have been expected, given the Magpies were leading 5-0, with Malick Thiaw also scoring earlier in the contest. But there was a coming together between the two England colleagues, with many fierce words being thrown at each other.

Dan Burn and Anthony Elanga were the ones who diffused the quarrel between the pair. Once the match was over with Newcastle taking a 6-1 aggregate lead to St. James' Park, ahead of the second leg against the Azerbaijanis on February 24, Gordon and Trippier both spoke to TNT Sports at the same time.

By the time the cameras were rolling and the questions were being asked, they had put the spat behind them. When asked what the disagreement was about, Trippier, as Gordon giggled to the left of him, said: "Obviously, Gordy scored a hat-trick and I think I, and all the other players, wanted to take the penalty, but he's out penalty taker.

"He wants to score goals, as everybody else does, but ultimately he is the penalty taker. In football, emotions are high on the pitch at times and it is what it is. He scored five goals, he was unbelievable today, and we move on."

When the question turned to Gordon, the £40million man said: "Yeah, but I understand everyone's opinion because I want everyone to succeed and we should be in it together. But I'm an attacker and the penalty taker, I want to score as many goals as I possible can.

"I understood everyone's opinion and emotions do get high. But, he's one of my closest team-mates, he has been since I joined the club, he's done so much for me. So, yeah, he's alright."

After the match, Howe also heralded even more praise on Gordon. He said: "He was really, really good in that first half. I mean, I think he started the press.

"A number of his goals came from his attitude off the ball. I'm really pleased with his first goal as well because that was a key moment. It was a really good finish. He could have had more, but a very good display.”
