As Michael Carrick prepares to take on Everton, who handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first bad loss after becoming permanent manager of Man Utd, he will have Ruben Amorim to thank for a gift.
Ruben Amorim is not the most popular person at Manchester United right now, and Michael Carrick’s immediate success after taking over hasn’t helped his reputation.
Basically, none of the decisions by Amorim has aged particularly well, and some have aged as borderline indefensible.

Fill in the blank. Did Amorim lay the foundation for success at Old Trafford?

However, when Carrick takes his side to face Everton, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s warning to his Man Utd squad after that 4-0 loss at Goodison Park in 2019 will come back, only to be vanquished by Amorim.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent ominous warning to Man Utd in 2019
Solskjaer had earned the permanent Man Utd manager job on March 28, 2019, on the back of an unbelievable run of results as an interim appointment.
The results collapsed as soon as he was appointed permanently, and the biggest shock came on April 21, less than a month later, when United travelled to face Everton at Goodison Park.
That day, United looked completely off the pace as Everton won the game 4-0, leading to an ominous warning from the Norwegian.

Solskjaer said after the game, seething (via BBC), “I’m going to be successful here, and there are players here who are not going to be a part of it.”
It is debatable whether Solskjaer actually ever got to rebuild the squad in his image, because the Glazers didn’t have a vision for the club.
However, it sparked a point about a problematic dressing room, one that was hammered home by Ralf Rangnick three years later.
Again, as an interim, Rangnick found it difficult to manage the dressing room, calling for an “open-heart surgery” of the squad.
Four years on from that Rangnick moment, and nearly seven years from Solskjaer’s warning, Carrick has Amorim to thank for that problem being a thing of the past.
Ruben Amorim’s invisible gift to Michael Carrick

While both Solskjaer and Rangnick struggled with a problematic dressing room, Amorim’s ruthless setting of standards and professionalism as non-negotiables has eradicated that problem.
The dressing room is in a much better place right now, full of committed players eager to take directions and execute them on the pitch.
They played for Ruben Amorim until his last day, and picked up from where they left off when Carrick arrived, only in a much better system.
It remains to be seen whether the sentiment remains the same if Carrick gets the permanent job, but he’s definitely not going to have the problem of a problematic dressing room.
Amorim didn’t do much good at Old Trafford, but this invisible gift, which can only be felt through intangibles like effort, desire, and professionalism, has ensured Carrick is in a much better place than Solskjaer and Rangnick could only dream of.
