Portsmouth capitalised on Charlton Athletic errors to claim a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night.
Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones provided an update on the club’s links with former West Ham striker Michail Antonio following the painful 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth at The Valley on Tuesday night.
Pompey had put themselves 2-0 up by half time with Terry Devlin adding his second and the south coast side’s third shortly after the break. Jayden Fevrier pulled one back for the hosts in the 64th minute but it was too little too late for the London outfit.
The result saw John Mousinho’s side climb to 19th in the Championship table, moving just one place and three points behind the Addicks. Reflecting on the result, Jones did not hold back with criticism for goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.
He said: "The majority of the game we were dominated physically. The first goal is a really poor one to concede, no one closed him [Terry Devlin] down and then it went straight through our goalkeeper, and that can't happen.
"The penalty is subjective. We had better chances, we had clear-cut chances, but the all round performance tonight was really poor. Today was not the messages we give. It's 11v11 out there and they wanted it more than us and that is unacceptable.
"If you don't do the basics well then you can't have a platform in the Championship. The first goal is a goalkeeping error, he has to save that. The second one we have to look at, but it was that kind of night."
Nathan Jones provides update on potential Michail Antonio transfer
Jones was also asked about the potential signing of Antonio. The BBC had reported that the 35-year-old had held initial talks with the Addicks over a potential return to domestic football.
The striker was in a serious car accident in December 2024 and did not play against for West Ham after that, being released last summer. He did play for Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup last June.
It’s claimed that Antonio has held discussions with Charlton Athletic over signing on a short-term deal with Jones supposedly believing that there is plenty Antonio can offer his squad before the end of the season.
In a potentially enticing update, Jones told reporter Richard Cawley: "Nothing yet (to share). Wheels are still in motion and that's where we are."
