49ers could face Leeds United fan backlash if ‘underpaid’ £5m star departs this summer

Leeds United are currently 15th in the Premier League, with a six-point buffer between themselves and the bottom three, and there’s a growing sense that they have enough about them to avoid the drop this season.

Behind the scenes, belief is building that they’ll get the job done, and plans are already being put in place to strengthen the squad once the summer window opens.

A new goalkeeper is likely to be near the top of the shopping list, and the club are also keen to line things up for a serious move for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

However, Leeds have a few contract decisions to make in the coming months and could risk losing one of their most important players, Jayden Bogle, if they do not offer improved terms ahead of the summer.

Jayde Bogle is criminally underpaid at Leeds

He has been one of the most important players in Daniel Farke’s team since he joined Leeds in 2024. He was huge as the Whites got promoted and has continued to remain key this season.

The former Sheffield United’s performances at right-back have proved crucial as Leeds continue to remain at an arm’s distance from the relegation zone.

Liverpool made a serious enquiry for the defender in the winter window. However, they are unlikely to make a move for him in the summer window.

However, other Premier League clubs are interested in him, and his contract at Leeds does not match his value in the squad.

He is still on the £30,000-per-week contract that he joined in 2024, and has not been offered a new deal yet.

Leeds are in talks to offer fresh terms to captain Ethan Ampadu. However, there is no talk of Bogle getting a new deal to match his performances at Elland Road.

Almost every Premier League club can offer him a far superior contract in the summer to tempt him away from Leeds in the summer transfer window

Leeds fans will be furious if the defender leaves

If Jayden Bogle makes it clear that he wants to move on from Leeds, he won’t be short of options. There are plenty of Premier League clubs who would jump at the chance to sign a right-back of his quality.

He’s already shown he can handle himself in the top flight, and a switch to a club in the top half could easily see him treble his current wages.

To his credit, and to his agent’s, there hasn’t been any public noise about dissatisfaction at Leeds. But if offers start arriving in the summer, you couldn’t really blame him if he was tempted to look elsewhere.

What may frustrate him is the wage structure. Players are earning more than Bogle, who either don’t have a long-term future at the club or are only bit-part figures at Elland Road.

If the 49ers don’t move quickly to sort out a new deal, there’s every chance he could start to feel undervalued and consider his options when the window opens.

And if he were to leave under those circumstances, it wouldn’t go down well with the supporters. Many fans already feel the American owners have been overly cautious with spending, and losing one of the team’s key players because he felt underappreciated would only deepen that frustration.
