'Didn't need' - Liverpool boss Arne Slot gives his honest reaction to Arsenal collapse against…

The Liverpool head coach has discussed his side’s improvements and the competitiveness of the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot insists that the Premier League has become more competitive over the past two seasons - with Arsenal’s draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers another example.

The Reds went into the 2025-26 season as reigning champions, having comfortably won the title last season. But this term, they sit just sixth in the table and face a battle to secure Champions League qualification.

Along the way, Liverpool have dropped points against struggling Burnley, newly-promoted Leeds United and were beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at Anfield. The Reds have had an upturn in recent months, though, losing just two of their previous 19 games in all competitions - both in stoppage-time against Bournemouth and Manchester City respectively.

Slot’s side travel to 17th-placed Forest on Sunday knowing how dangerous that game will be. Having watched league leaders Arsenal throw away a two-goal lead to be held to a draw against basement side Wolves did not prove how difficult it is to win games.

The Liverpool boss said: “Compared to a few weeks ago, I don’t think a lot has changed. From the last 19 games, we have lost in added-time and twice, we did not deserve to lose both of those games. We didn’t need yesterday [Arsenal’s draw] to know how difficult it is to win a Premier League game. We have experienced this, this season a lot of times and all the teams have experienced it.

“That is what has made the Premier League nicer this season and last season that it is much more competitive than two, three, four, five, six years ago. We have improved compared to 3-4 months ago.

“But I would even, as weird as it would sound, would include the Bournemouth game because apart from the goals conceded, we had total control, were dominant, created a lot of chances and the same can be said about the second half against City. We are better than a few months ago and there are two simple reasons. how fit we are now and we are much better in set-pieces, at the moment.”
