Marseille have appointed former Aston Villa defender Habib Beye as their new manager.
Roberto De Zerbi left the French club by mutual consent last week following a 5–0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain and a league-phase exit in the Champions League.
Beye, who played for Marseille for four years, had been fired as manager at Rennes earlier this month after a four-match winless run.
"His deep attachment to Olympique de Marseille and his intimate knowledge of the environment in Marseille can be major assets in taking the club to the next step," the club said in a statement.
Medhi Benatia, Marseille’s director of football added: "The choice of Habib Beye as OM's new coach is fully in line with our desire to recruit a coach with the leadership skills needed to take charge of a team that obviously needs to be re-motivated after a difficult period on the pitch.
“From our very first discussions, he struck me as extremely committed and totally focused on the future, with clear objectives for everyone: to quickly get back to winning ways, aim for a place on the Ligue 1 podium and try to win the Coupe de France to give the people.”
Beye spent two and a half years at Villa between August 2009 and February 2012 after joining from Newcastle United.
However, his game time during that period was limited, as he made only 18 appearances for the club.
