Newcastle Untied forward Anthony Gordon has bluntly dismissed transfer rumours linking him with a move to Liverpool. The former Everton forward scored four first-half goals in a barnstorming display against Qarabag in the Champions League.

His four-goal haul helped Eddie Howe's side to a 6-1 first-leg away victory over the Azerbaijani champions, which has all but secured the Magpies' place in the round of 16. Despite his record breaking haul in Baku, Gordon remarkably claimed he should have scored a double hat-trick.

His stellar performance in the Champions League proceeds speculation stating Liverpool are interested in him again, as are Arsenal and Manchester United. However, Gordon poured cold water over those rumours, insisting St. James' Park is the only place he wants to be.

When questioned about the rumours of him being the next big star to leave Tyneside, he told Chronicle Live: "About me? I haven't seen them. What are they saying?"

When the rumours were explained to him, he hit back with a fiery 18-word response, saying: "I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish."

Upon learning he has been associated with Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, Gordon responded: "It's the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do (names out of the hat). I haven't heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media)."

Gordon has previously confessed talk of a move to Anfield in the summer of 2024 did turn his head, but this is not the case now. He said: "I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now.

"You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me I have done that (before) and I am not going to do that now."

Gordon's tally of Champions League goals now stands at 10 for the campaign, with 14 across all competitions this season. However, he remained frustrated not to have added more, saying: "I should have scored more - I should have had six goals.

"I missed two chances that I should score. I don't want to call them easy but they were chances that I should score. I am always looking for more. I scored four but I am that type of person, I am not fully happy with what I have achieved, it should have been six, maybe next time."

In the immediate aftermath, Howe also heaped praise on Gordon's display, particularly when it came to his work off the ball. The Magpies boss said: "Yeah, he was really, really good in that first half. I mean, I think he started the press.

“A number of his goals came from his attitude off the ball. I'm really pleased with his first goal as well because that was a key moment. It was a really good finish. He could have had more, but a very good display.”
