Newcastle United latest news: Anthony Gordon slams ‘load of rubbish’ transfer exit claims amid Liverpool and Arsenal reports.
Anthony Gordon has slammed speculation surrounding his future at Newcastle United, describing reports linking him with a move away from St James’ Park as ‘a load of rubbish’.
Gordon netted four times in a blistering first-half in Baku on Wednesday night, surpassing Alan Shearer as the club’s record Champions League goalscorer. Gordon now has ten goals in this season’s Champions League, a haul only bettered by Kylian Mbappe in the entire competition.
His form in the league, one that was often used as a stick to beat him with for much of the season, has also picked up in recent weeks. Eddie Howe has used Gordon as a striker recently, with Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga either side of him and Nick Woltemade acting as a slightly advanced midfield option.
That combination worked well in the second half at Villa Park and blew away Qarabag on Wednesday night. Gordon’s performance in particular drew praise from his head coach: “He was really, really good in that first half,” Howe told TNT Sports.
“I mean, I think he started the press. A number of his goals came from his attitude off the ball. I'm really pleased with his first goal as well because that was a key moment.
“It was a really good finish. He could have had more, but a very good display.”

Most recently, Liverpool have been credited with an interest in him with Caught Offside, via the BBC Gossip blog, claiming that the Reds could move for the winger when the summer transfer window opens. The report also states that Arsenal and Manchester City are also interested in his signature, with a deal for Gordon likely to cost around £95m this summer.
Those reports, though, are new to Gordon and ones that he isn’t paying any attention to: “It's the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat,” Gordon told reporters following Newcastle United’s win over Qarabag.
"They do. I haven't heard anything, they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media).”
He added: “Of course. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish.
“I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now. You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me I have done that (before) and I am not going to do that now.”
Gordon and his teammates have returned to Tyneside and will now begin preparations for their return to Premier League action on Saturday. The Magpies face another trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in the league (8pm kick-off).
Newcastle won the reverse fixture at St James’ Park in November, but have since suffered two defeats against the Citizens. Those, of course, came in the Carabao Cup and they have an opportunity to avenge that loss on Saturday against a side they will also face in the FA Cup in just over a fortnight’s time.
