Garner has been in great form, so his match-up with Mainoo in midfield is a duel that could potentially decide the match.

What to expect from Kobbie Mainoo vs James Garner in midfield
Considering that Carrick used to mentor Garner at United, the Red Devils boss will know what to expect 24-year-old midfielder.
Garner has spent part of this season at right-back, but he has recently stepped back up into midfield. Under David Moyes, Everton tend to play a 4-2-3-1 formation and Garner is one of the two holding midfielders.

Carrick has also used a 4-2-3-1 system and has preferred a midfield pivot of Casemiro and Mainoo. In terms of pressing man-to-man, expect Mainoo to be the midfielder further forward putting pressure on Garner when Everton are in possession.

As per WhoScored, retaining possession and concentration are two of Garner’s biggest strengths. Garner is also an elite interceptor, ranking third in the entire Premier League in that category.
In comparison, Mainoo’s energy levels at United have been at an all-time high under Carrick, with the Carrington graduate covering more distance than his teammates in recent matches.
It will also be an interesting match-up for England manager Thomas Tuchel to watch with the 2026 World Cup just around the corner.
Two other tactical match-ups to watch out for in Everton vs Man United
While Mainoo and Garner are going head-to-head in midfield, fans should also keep an eye out on an interesting duel between Bryan Mbeumo and Jarrad Branthwaite.
Branthwaite has recently returned to the Everton line-up, and he could be pitted against the in-form Mbeumo who has been playing as a centre-forward under Carrick.
United submitted several bids for Branthwaite in 2024 but walked away due to Everton’s demands. The English defender will have a point to prove, but he will have his hands full trying to keep United’s top scorer in 2025/26 quiet.
