Move over Gyokeres: Arsenal dud is becoming their biggest waste of money since Pepe - opinion

Arsenal’s attempts to secure the Premier League title last night, after only being able to secure a 2-2 draw with bottom-of-the-table side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mikel Arteta’s men had the chance to pull further clear of Manchester City at Molineux, but threw away a two-goal lead, with the latter of the host’s goals coming in stoppage time.

The Gunners now sit just five points clear of Pep Guardiola’s men at the summit of the table, with their rivals now currently boasting a game in hand at present.

However, with a trip to the Etihad still on the cards before the season finishes, it could make for a nail-biting end to the club’s latest battle to secure top-flight glory.

One player has massively failed to deliver at the Emirates since his own transfer, with the manager needing to make a huge call on his future in North London.

The stats behind Gyokeres’ struggles at Arsenal this season

During the summer transfer window, Arsenal decided to fork out a reported £60m for the signature of striker Viktor Gyokeres from Portuguese side Sporting CP.

The Swede arrived with huge expectations to provide the goods in the final third, after netting 54 times across all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign.

However, after such a move, the 27-year-old has massively failed to deliver, as seen by his tally of 13 goals in his 35 appearances to date - a figure way below the expectations of the fans.

He’s now failed to score in any of his last three outings for the Gunners, with his underlying stats demonstrating the struggles he’s endured in North London.

Gyokeres has completed just 61% of the passes he’s attempted, with such a figure ranking him in the bottom 10% of all attackers in the division this campaign.

He’s also completed just 18% of the dribbles he’s attempted this campaign, which also places him in the bottom 20% of players in England’s top-flight throughout 2025/26.

The Arsenal star who’s becoming their biggest waste since Pepe

Spending big on new attackers hasn’t been alien to Arsenal in recent years, with the Gunners previously forking out a reported £72m for the signature of Nicolas Pepe in the summer of 2019.

The Ivorian, like Gyokeres, arrived with huge expectations at the Emirates, but he ultimately failed to deliver, as seen by his disappointing stats in North London.

He ended up making 112 appearances over a three-year period and only scoring 27 times - an average of one goal every four games he played for the Gunners.

Pepe would even depart the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, highlighting how much of a waste of money the attacker was - despite the excitement he generated upon his move.

However, Eberechi Eze could well find himself in a similar category in the near future, with the Englishman costing a reported £67m during the summer transfer window.

He was seen by many as the perfect number ten to help the club in their quest for title glory, but such a move has failed to ignite - just like that of Pepe a couple of years ago.

The 27-year-old did manage to register a hat-trick in the North London Derby, but his time in Arteta’s side has failed to ignite in recent months - as seen with his recent lack of action.

He’s only started two league games since the middle of December, even being withdrawn at the break during the recent 2-2 draw with Brentford last week.

The Spaniard even decided to utilise winger Bukayo Saka in the number ten role at Molineux last night, which further highlights the lack of faith placed in the £67m signing.

Eze would only feature for a total of 25 minutes in the West Midlands, but was unable to make a real impact on proceedings - as seen by his underlying stats.

He only registered 15 touches of the ball during his substitute appearance, with only one of his touches coming within the opposition’s penalty area - showcasing his lack of attacking quality.

The Englishman also failed to create any chances for his teammates, with the player unable to make a positive impression after being called upon off the bench.

He and Gyokeres have no doubt failed to deliver like many supporters expected, especially after the pair cost a combined £127.5m during the summer transfer window.

The former of the aforementioned duo has certainly fallen short of expectations, with Eze undoubtedly in huge danger of becoming the latest big money addition to flop at the Emirates.
