Sheffield United’s Championship rivals to appeal EFL decision as they appoint ex-Birmingham…

Leicester City were plunged into relegation trouble earlier this month when they were docked six points

Championship strugglers Leicester City have launched an appeal over their recent points deduction.

The Foxes, who are currently in 22nd position and at severe risk of being relegated in consecutive successions, were deducted six points earlier this month after being charged by the Premier League in May for a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach in the three years leading up to the 2023/24 campaign.

The deduction saw the club fall from 17th position to 20th in the league table at the time before further defeats against Birmingham City and Southampton allowed both West Brom and Blackburn Rovers to leapfrog them in the league table.

Leicester are currently 10 points behind Sheffield United in the table and are two points away from safety. They were tipped by many to be promotion contenders at the start of the campaign following their Championship title win in 2024 but now find themselves in a heated battle to stay in the division.

Leicester City appeal points deduction

The Premier League have said in a statement that they will be seeking to have the appeal resolved urgently and before the conclusion of the Championship season.

The process will include a ruling on the Premier League’s own appeal against the independent commission’s decision not to sanction Leicester for late submission of the club’s annual accounts.

Both parties have submitted their appeals to the chair of the judicial panel, who will now appoint an appeal board to help with the case.

Leicester City yet to comment on appeal as they appoint new manager

Leicester City, who like Sheffiled Wednesday are struggling at the wrong end of the table, haven’t yet commented on the situation.

They recently appointed Gary Rowett to try and steady the ship between now and the end of the season after parting ways with Marti Cifuentes three weeks ago after an underwhelming first half of the season.

Rowett has been in similar situations before. He notably guided Oxford United to safety last season, and also oversaw Birmingham City’s last eight games the year prior to that in an unsuccessful attempt to save the Blues from relegation.

He’s also managed Millwall, Derby County and has worked at Birmingham once before along with Burton Albion.

Rowett is scheduled to face another of his former clubs this weekend in Stoke City as he looks to get some vital points on the board. A victory in that one, regardless of what happens in the Steel City derby, will mean Wednesday can mathematically only finish level on points with the Foxes. However, it’s worth noting that the East Midlands side have a vastly superior goal difference of -7 in comparison to Wednesday’s -45.
