Confirmed: Saka commits long-term future to Arsenal

Arsenal, probably hoping to do this when the mood in the fanbase was somewhat more positive, have [confirmed](https://www.arsenal.com/news/bukayo-saka-signs-new-long-term-contract-46329922) that Bukayo Saka has signed a new long-term deal, reportedly tying him to the club until 2031.

Since breaking into the first team under Unai Emery in 2018, the Hale End product has made 297 appearances for Arsenal – more than any of his current teammates – and has 78 goals and 79 assists to his name.

Borrowing the parlance of American sports, he is Arsenal’s very own “franchise player”: an elite cornerstone athlete around whom the team has been built, both on the pitch and in terms of identity and marketing.

With a lucrative new contract, one that places him among the upper tier of earners in European football, the challenge for the 24-year-old is pushing himself to even greater heights.

A few years ago, Saka was a shoo-in whenever individual awards came around for club, league and country. In quick succession, he picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year, back-to-back Arsenal Player of the Season awards (2021/22 and 2022/23) and England Men’s Player of the Year in those same campaigns. But recurring hamstring issues, including a serious tear last season that required surgery, have slightly stalled that upward trajectory.

That is not to downplay just how good he is. Few players in the modern game look as comfortable whether deployed in defence, midfield or attack. Arsenal are simply a better side with Saka in the line-up. The real question now is how best to use him as both he, the team and opponents continue to evolve. It’s a fantastic problem to have.

On his decision to sign a new deal, Saka told [Arsenal.com](https://www.arsenal.com/news/saka-his-trophy-dreams-and-repaying-love): “I’m feeling amazing. I think it’s a fantastic moment for my family and for me. I feel immense joy to continue my journey at this club. For me, it was an easy commitment and I just hope to win everything here.

“The journey that I’ve been on, from where I started to where I am now, and the journey the team’s been on as well, is a special one.

“I believe the next few years are going to be the years that we get over the line, and we’re able to win trophies and make history for this club. We’re back where we belong, fighting for everything.”

A hat-trick at Sp\*rs at the weekend would be most welcome, Bukayo.
