Leeds United are hoping for extra add-ons from West Ham’s deal to sign Crysencio Summerville in 2024, which includes any senior international call-up for the winger.
As we fight to stay in the Premier League, Leeds are looking over our shoulders at West Ham’s stunning resurgence in form of late.
Spearheading their current run is former Leeds star Crysencio Summerville. The winger has finally hit goalscoring form reminiscent of his 23/24 campaign at Elland Road.
Leeds United awaiting Crysencio Summerville add-on clause through international call-up
When Leeds sold Summerville to the Irons for an initial £25million, there were add-ons included in the deal from the summer of 2024.
What was reported from the West Ham end of proceedings was that Leeds could gain as much as £4million from Summerville earning international recognition.
Having progressed through the Netherlands youth system, Summerville has yet to gain a senior call-up under Ronald Koeman.
However, his run of six goals and one assist in his last seven games surely has him on the verge of being called into the national team. Next month’s international break could be a huge opportunity for Summerville to force himself into the World Cup spotlight.
Suriname-Netherlands tug-of-war over Crysencio Summerville unfolds – Could reunite with Leeds United’s Joel Piroe
Summerville, though, holds dual nationality. Not only could he represent the Netherlands, but he could also opt to play for Suriname.
Dutch outlet Soccer News now cover comments from podcast Kick-Off, in which journalists Valentijn Driessen and Jeroen Kapteijns discuss the chances of Summerville featuring for the Oranje.
“He’s a player who’s doing fantastically at West Ham,” Driessen said. “Koeman has to look at that and you shouldn’t just let it go.”
Although, Kapteijns believes that Summerville’s mind is made up for Suriname.
“It will be too late; he’s already made his choice for Suriname,” Kapteijns remarked. “If he makes the play-offs, he’ll simply go to the World Cup. He’ll make his debut in March when Suriname plays against Bolivia and perhaps Iraq.”
Should Summerville opt for Suriname, he’d be teaming up with former Leeds teammate Joel Piroe. The forward announced his switch of allegiances earlier in the campaign.
Suriname have an intercontinental World Cup qualifying playoff in March. First, they take on Bolivia, victory would see them face a playoff final against Iraq to make it to the tournament in the summer.
Leeds United could gain impressive windfall from Crysencio Summerville international call-up
I was baffled by the £25million fee we got for Summerville in 2024. He was the best player in the Championship at a very young age. Meanwhile, we’d managed £40million apiece for two of his teammates.
However, getting an extra £4million (if that ends up the case) would be ideal going forward. Whether or not the add-on clause specifically stipulates a Netherlands call-up or just any senior cap remains to be seen.
The shift towards seasonal revenue in the Premier League means that any windfall like this could boost our spending power in the summer.
A reunion with Piroe would be nice to see as well, and that could fire Suriname to the World Cup.
