Daniele Ghilardi made a slow start to life at AS Roma this season but in the past few weeks, he’s gained prominence. The defender is now attracting interest from Newcastle United.
The Giallorossi signed the player from Hellas Verona on an initial loan with an obligation to buy last summer. This came right after he impressed for Italy U21s at the European Championships last year.
He didn’t feature in any of Roma’s first eight Serie A games. Slowly, he has turned things around.
In 2026, he’s made six starts and impressed in the 2-2 draw against Napoli at the weekend. As attention grows around the 23-year-old, Newcastle United are emerging as a suitor.

All this has happened in the absence of Mario Hermoso, who is nursing an injury. As the Spaniard now steps up his recovery, there are question marks over whether he will directly replace Ghilardi or not.
His form commands a starting spot under Gian Piero Gasperini, who has been left impressed. All of this has attracted the interest of Newcastle United too.
More than that, Rino Gattuso is keeping an eye on Ghilardi for a possible Italy call-up in the future.
It is very possible that Gasperini opts to play both Hermoso and Ghilardi, as a reward for the ex-Verona player’s form.
Magpies switch could be too early for Ghilardi

When it comes to a Premier League switch, it might come too early for Ghilardi.
He is very reliable on the ball and when carrying it forward but is yet to grow physically enough to play in England. There is no doubting his overall quality either but he still has one stage of development to go through before a big move elsewhere.
