Bruno Guimaraes ruled-out for two extra matches as star issues 4-word Newcastle United message

Newcastle United latest news: Bruno Guimaraes posted an update from Brazil as his teammates defeated Qarabag in the Champions League.

Four goals in the first-half from Anthony Gordon and a header from Malick Thiaw ensured the tie was over at half-time. Jacob Murphy’s first ever Champions League goal in the second-half restored their five goal lead and ensured that, barring a miracle on Tyneside on Tuesday night, that Newcastle United will meet either Barcelona or Chelsea in next month’s last-16.

Guimaraes, though, will miss those games. The Brazilian remains sidelined with a muscle injury he picked up late on against Tottenham Hotspur last week and is not expected back in action until after the March international break.

Newcastle United’s progression to the Round of 16 means that Guimaraes will have missed 11 games in total by the time he returns to action if, as expected, he is back for their trip to Selhurst Park on the weekend of April 11.

Guimaraes has already been sidelined for two games, against Villa and Qarabag, and will miss another ten before returning to fitness. Those ten games include Premier League matches against: Manchester City, Everton, Manchester United, Chelsea and Sunderland, an FA Cup game against Pep Guardiola’s side at St James’ Park next month as well as those three aforementioned Champions League matches.

As part of his recovery from that muscle injury, Guimaraes has flown back to Brazil to work in conjunction with the Brazilian national team. Speaking about the decision for Guimaraes to return to South America, Eddie Howe said: “I think he spoke with our medical team, and we've been in consultation with the Brazilian national team, so he's going to do his first part of his rehab with the Brazilian national team and then he'll come back to us for the last four weeks.

“So I think it's a good mix for Bruno. Because in the initial stages he won't be able to do too much, he gets a sort of mental refresh, while doing some good work, and then comes back to finish off his final part of his rehab.”

On Wednesday night, Guimaraes posted a video of him watching his teammates in action whilst in an oxygen chamber. ‘What a game boys 🖤🤍’ the Brazilian wrote over that video.

That win in Baku means that Newcastle United have now won three away games in a row - two of those coming without the influence of Guimaraes in the starting XI. However, they still have a monkey on their back in the Premier League and are winless in 12 matches without the Brazilian since he made his debut for the club back in February 2022.

To end that this weekend, they will have to do something that no Newcastle United side has ever done - win a Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium. Newcastle’s last visit to the Etihad Stadium came earlier this month when they were soundly defeated 3-1 by Guardiola’s side.

Guimaraes also missed that game as he nursed an ankle injury he had picked up two weeks prior against PSV Eindhoven.
