Granit Xhaka will present Regis Le Bris with 'ideal Sunderland situation'

What does he do with Enzo Le Fee?

In the very early weeks of the season, Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra established themselves as Sunderland's first choice midfield trio.

But that was broken up after Diarra was forced to undergo groin surgery, which resulted in Le Bris moving Le Fee - who had been playing on the left side of the attack - into a more central role.

After Le Fee's arrival last January, Le Bris regularly told of how he thinks the Frenchman is at his best in the middle, and the 26-year-old has been one of Sunderland's best performers in the last couple of months.

But Diarra has been excellent since his return from injury and the African Cup of Nations, Sadiki has starred all season and Xhaka will obviously go straight back into the side when he's back fit.

With that in mind, the most likely outcome is Le Fee moving back to the left. But Sunderland did strengthen their options on the flank with the capture of Nilson Angulo last month, Romaine Mundle is fit again and impressed in the win at Oxford and Chemsdine Talbi might play more of his football on the left than the right when Bertrand Traore is available again.

Le Bris will have options - and that's how he likes it.

He said: "We'll see. This is the ideal situation but it's not often the case.

"I would like to have the full squad and a good level of competition. It means that like Arsenal, you can start with 11 players and then after 60 or 65 minutes have three, four, five players available who can give more energy and the X Factor.

"That's the level you need in the Premier League. If we can have this situation I'd be happy. It won't be tough for me."

Diarra has very quickly re-established himself as a key Sunderland figure since his return from injury and the African Cup of Nations.

"It's important to have a new signing, or like a new signing," he said.

"He's really well connected with the lads. He missed those months and doesn't have the same level of experience, but so far he's worked really well.

"Tactically he's been really good, it's a good sign for us.

"He was determined to get back but it was also important for him to heal properly. This type of injury might be serious so we took a good period and didn't rush. We prepared him for his national team and then he was ready to play."

In the absence of Xhaka, Sunderland have lost three of their four Premier League games. It's been a challenging spell but Le Bris believes it will benefit his side and says the other leaders in his squad have stepped up.

He said: "Against Burnley, I think so. Arsenal was a different challenge but we played with good energy in the squad, which means it was driven.

"It's not always easy to assess different roles and who is important in different phases. The overall energy is positive so it means the system is alive.

"You have to experience different situations. We need the energy in the squad."
