Tomas Soucek's astonishing claim about his time at West Ham will stun David Moyes

When David Moyes talks about the key to his success at West Ham, the name Tomas Soucek is never too far away.

David Moyes had two spells at West Ham and is now doing a brilliant job in a second stint with Everton too.

His achievements with both the Hammers and the Toffees have been notable.

The Scot may have led Everton to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

But it is at West Ham where Moyes cemented his reputation as one of the best managers around by leading the club to a first trophy for 43 years when winning the Europa Conference League back in 2023.

It was the crowning achievement of Moyes’ time with the Hammers, but there were many others alongside it too.

Moyes’ long list of West Ham achievements

Saving the club from relegation twice in two spells, three consecutive seasons in Europe and recording West Ham’s record ever Premier League points haul were others.

Some would argue amongst his biggest achievements were shielding the owners of both Everton and West Ham from fan unrest.

What should Nuno do to END that run this weekend?

After leaving Goodison and – on two occasions – the London Stadium, that quickly bubbled back to the surface.

There are clearly different contexts to each of Moyes’ achievements.

But winning a major trophy is the ultimate in any sport.

Especially for a club so starved of success like West Ham.

So Tomas Soucek’s bold claim about his time at West Ham will stun Moyes.

On a personal level, Moyes added another major achievement when he was awarded an OBE.

Moyes thanked West Ham for his OBE, saying he believes the trophy win helped seal the prestigious title.

He also singled out Soucek and a couple of other West Ham stars as the driving force behind his success in east London which ultimately proved the tipping point to be awarded the OBE.

Soucek’s bold West Ham claim will stun Moyes

With all that as background, it seems obvious Moyes’ greatest achievement would be that European trophy triumph.

But Soucek believes it is going to be surpassed by Nuno Espirito Santo.

Because according to the big Czech fan favourite, West Ham surviving in the Premier League this season will go down as the greatest achievement since joining the club in January 2020.

“If we keep going with them, we believe that we can do it on our own without the help of others,” Soucek said about West Ham’s fight to beat the drop in a recent interview with the club’s website.

“There’s a huge motivation for me to save this situation, and I think actually in the position we’re in, if we can do that, I would look at it as one of the best seasons of my life because of the position we were in.

“I have to say that this is not the position we want to be in, but to save it after the problems we had, it would be unique.

“I’ve been here for six years, and I try to keep my consistency all the time. I love this club, it’s my home.”

Soucek: Survival will trump European trophy win for West Ham

While staying on the Premier League gravy train is clearly worth far more in monetary terms than winning a trophy, Soucek’s claim may shock Moyes.

Winning that European title will live in the memories of West Ham fans for a lifetime but staying up after a turbulent couple of years will soon be forgotten amongst the other highs and lows of following the club.

What it does show is just how grave the situation is for the Hammers if Soucek believes it surpasses all other achievements in his six years plus in east London.

For that debate to have meaning, though, West Ham must go on and pull it off first.

And a win against Bournemouth this weekend would be a huge step in the right direction.
