Sunderland and Leeds United both reportedly failed with attempts to sign Galatasaray star Gabriel Sara this winter.
The Black Cats spent much of the winter market offloading players, but did bring in a handful of fresh faces as well. Wingers Nilson Angulo and Jocelin Ta Bi both arrived on Wearside, while deputy goalkeeper Melker Ellborg is expected to provide cover and competition for current number one Robin Roefs going forward.
But as per an update from Turkish outlet Fotospor, Regis Le Bris’ men also made an effort to bolster their ranks in the centre of midfield. The continental publication state that both Sunderland and fellow Premier League new boys Leeds made approaches for Sara last month, only to be knocked back because neither the player nor his current employers deemed their offers to be attractive enough.
The specifics of either side’s talks are not relayed, but it is suggested that Sara never properly considered leaving Galatasaray. It is also unclear as to whether Sunderland or Leeds will look to reignite their pursuit at the end of the season, but reports elsewhere claim that the player is valued at around £26.2 million.
Who is reported Sunderland transfer target Gabriel Sara?
Sara signed for Galatasaray from Norwich City in 2024, having started his career with boyhood club Sao Paulo back in his native Brazil. Since arriving in Turkey, he has registered eight goals and 13 assists across 77 appearances, with half of his strikes coming in his last five outings.

Speaking back in July, as quoted by Fanatik, the midfielder seemingly hinted that he is no great rush to leave Istanbul, emphasising his hunger to win silverware. He said: "We play to win every game we play. Winning the Champions League is more difficult than winning the Super League. We will not play just to play.
“We will play to win the Champions League, the Super League and the Turkish Cup. Every time we go to the stadium we go out to win. I hope to win more trophies this year. It will be my first experience in the Champions League. Last year I played in the play-offs, but of course that doesn't count as Champions League."
Sara also spoke of his belief that a prominent role in the Champions League could eventually lead to recognition at international level. He continued: "Playing only in the Super League, it can be a bit difficult to make it to the Brazilian national team. But with the opportunity to play in the Champions League, everything can change. If I play good soccer and attract attention, maybe I will get a call. It's a dream from childhood."
