Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt are both set to miss Manchester United's Premier League trip to Everton this weekend, Michael Carrick has confirmed.

Both players have been absent for United in recent weeks, with Mount missing the last three games. De Ligt hasn't featured since the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at the end of November.

It had been hoped that United would welcome at least one of the players for Monday night's visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. However, Carrick's update on the injured duo means a return is currently unlikely.

"Mason [Mount] is getting closer, we have to be patient with him." Carrick said. "We don’t want to rush anything, he is getting closer. De Ligt is working towards it, he is a little bit behind Mason."

Mount has played under Carrick, but he was a surprise absence in the 3-2 win over Fulham. It was confirmed at the time that he had picked up a minor injury in training and he has missed the last two games.

However, the former Chelsea star isn't ready for this week's game, despite Carrick suggesting he would be.

"Mason will be probably not for Tuesday [West Ham], probably after, but definitely gone into the Everton game, he'll be back," the United interim boss said before the last game.

On De Ligt, the central defender has been suffering with a lower back injury for nearly three months now.

At the time, Ruben Amorim initially suggested he would make a swift comeback, but he has missed the last 13 league games.

Patrick Dorgu has been missing since the Arsenal win, with a hamstring problem forcing him out for an extended period.

“Pat, unfortunately, is going to be out for a period of time. We are still working through how long that is going to be," Carrick said.

“It’s disappointing because he has had such a big couple of weeks. We weren't sure if it was a little bit of cramp or if it was something more serious.
