Michael Carrick has confirmed Mason Mount is "getting closer" to a return to the Manchester United squad ahead of the clash with Everton on Monday night, but Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined with a back injury. Mount was last named in a matchday squad against Arsenal at the Emirates in January. The midfielder picked up a knock in training during the preparation to face Fulham and has been absent since.
Carrick's options could be strengthened by Mount's return from injury when United make the trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday. However, De Ligt continues to be unavailable as he recovers from a back injury that saw him last play against Crystal Palace on November 30.

Patrick Dorgu is the only other United absentee due to injury. The Denmark international picked up a hamstring injury against Arsenal and spent last weekend in Dubai to recharge.
When asked to provide a team news update, Carrick said: "Mason is getting closer, we have been patient with him. We don’t want to push anything. We want him back and fit. He is getting closer which is good for us. Mat [De Ligt] is working towards it, he is a bit behind Mason."
Mount put together a run of 14 games between September and December without picking up an injury. The 27-year-old scored in wins against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Wolves.
Ruben Amorim initially suggested De Ligt's absence would be short-term, but the Dutchman has been unavailable for over three months now. De Ligt was the only United player to have played every minute of the Premier League campaign until he suffered an injury to his back.
Carrick has the opportunity to return to winning ways against Everton after drawing against West Ham. "There is a lot that goes into a game. David [Moyes]’s games are hard to play against, he is such a good manager and knowing what it takes to have success in this league," said Carrick.
"It is a new challenge for us. It is going to take a lot, going away, new stadium but historically always been tough, one of the toughest I have played away from home and trying to be the best way we can. We have got a good base and foundation and spirit. We will have to draw on all of that Monday night."
Speaking about the West Ham draw, Carrick said: "We have got to be balanced in terms of not getting carried away if we win games or don’t come away with the three points.
"Games are tough in this league and a lot of the performance in the control and how we went about this game. Scoring a late goal is a big positive. It is an important point for us. Of course we wanted to win the game but it is not all negative."
Everton are eighth in the Premier League, but the Toffees have won just four games at home this season.
