Everton close to breaking a record which should be impossible due to Premier League rule

Everton fans are not being given a chance to build a relationship with the new ground this season.

The Hill Dickinson Stadium has played host to just two games which kicked off at 3pm on a Saturday this season, the traditional slot which allows – or allowed – supporters to forge matchday habits and routines.

Ridiculously, the visit of Manchester United on Monday will mark the sixth Premier League game Everton have had to play on a Monday night this term – three times the amount of Saturday afternoon matches.

As a result, the Toffees are close to breaking a record, but Premier League rules in place this season mean it shouldn’t even be possible.

Everton close in on West Ham but the Premier League have seemingly ignored a rule

Throughout Premier League history, no side has played more games on a Monday night than West Ham did in the 1995/96 campaign with seven.

Team and Season Monday Night Games (19:00 or later)

West Ham United – 1995/1996 7

Everton – 2025/2026 6 (including Man Utd game)

West Ham United – 2024/2025 5

West Ham United – 2005/2006 5

Liverpool – 2022/2023 5

Nottingham Forest – 1996/1997 5

Manchester City – 2009/2010 5

West Ham United – 2000/2001 5

Manchester United – 1992/1993 5

West Ham United – 2020/2021 5

Manchester United – 1995/1996 5

Norwich City – 1992/1993 5

Wolverhampton Wanderers – 2020/2021 5

Liverpool – 1996/1997 5

Leeds United – 2020/2021 5

Chelsea – 2023/2024 5

Liverpool – 2009/2010 5

Crystal Palace – 2021/2022 5

Coventry City – 1994/1995 5

As aforesaid, Everton will have played six after Manchester United leave the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday, but David Moyes will surely be asking questions.

BBC Sport suggested back in November that there is a rule in place this term, which means no Premier League side is allowed to play more than five games on a Monday night. When discussing fixture congestion at Old Trafford, they wrote: β€œAs Manchester United have already been picked three times in the Monday slot, they can be selected only two more times.”

So, Moyes will presumably be asking the Premier League why Everton have been pencilled in to play six games on a Monday night, and with 11 more matches to come after the visit of Manchester United, there is every chance of the Toffees breaking West Ham’s record.

Scattered schedule at the Hill Dickinson Stadium could be impacting results

Ben Foster once memorably claimed that Everton fans have a negative impact on their own side when in a bad mood, causing players to make mistakes and grow nervous.

The more the Premier League make Everton fans travel to games late on a work night and reshuffle fixtures, the more annoyed supporters will become, which risks spilling into the atmosphere during matches.

If Foster is right, then that sour mood will also have an effect on the players.

Everton are currently without a win in six games at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and have won just five in 15 at the new ground so far.

What is going so wrong at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for Everton? 😳

It is now less than one win in every three following the loss against Bournemouth… 😀

Therefore, it is possible that the sheer volume of strange kick off times has already had a negative impact on results at Everton this season.
