Former Leeds United flop advised to make Premier League return amid contract uncertainty

A former Leeds United midfielder has been told to consider a return to the Premier League.

Former Leeds United flop Weston McKennie has been advised to have a second crack at the Premier League and told he would ‘make any team better’.

The United States international forged a fine reputation as an all-action midfielder during his time with German club Schalke 04 and continued to shine following a loan stint with Juventus that eventually became a permanent switch to the Serie A giants. McKennie made a somewhat surprising loan move to Leeds during the final days of the January transfer window in 2023 as the Whites battled against relegation from the Premier League.

However, the Washington-born star was unable to make a major impact during his time at Elland Road and provided just one assist in 20 appearances before returning to parent club Juventus in the aftermath of Leeds’ promotion into the Championship. Since returning to Turin, McKennie has re-established himself as a key figure with Juve and helped them lift the Coppa Italia with a final win against Atalanta in May 2024. The midfielder is now approaching the final months of his current contract and there has been speculation over what could lie in wait - and former United States international Tab Ramos has suggested a Premier League return should be on the agenda.

He told GOAL: “I have to tell you, Weston McKennie is a player that can play anywhere - in any position on the field. Look at what he has done for Juve the last couple of months, they have had him everywhere - from right-back to centre mid, attacking mid. He always ends up in the box and is always dangerous. He has always made a difference. To be fair, Juventus’ recovery is partly on the shoulders of Weston McKennie; he has been that good for them.

“Would I like to see him go to the EPL? Juventus is another one of those clubs - you are talking about a great club all over the world. I really think that Weston McKennie can make any team better. I would personally like to see him back in the EPL playing for a club that is fighting for titles.”
