Newcastle United fans may be sick of the sight of Manchester City, with the FA Cup fifth round draw having yet again paired their side with the Etihad all-stars, less than a fortnight on from a Carabao Cup semi-final defeat by Pep Guardiola’s men.
The Magpies were knocked out of the FA Cup by City at the quarter-final stage both two years ago and in 2020. The final 16 tie at St James’ Park will be their 14th meeting with the Citizens under Eddie Howe’s management following this weekend's Premier League match.
However, history DOES give United supporters some hope* of springing a surprise in either the Premier League game at the Etihad or the FA Cup clash at St James’ Park next month. Here are the last five times that Newcastle have beaten City.
(*When it comes to winning at the Etihad, we’re not talking recent history . . .)

Newcastle went into this game just two points above the Premier League relegation zone. But Harvey Barnes struck at the double, cancelling out Ruben Dias’ equaliser for the visitors.
The victory meant that Newcastle stayed in 14th in the table but moved well clear of the bottom three and prevented City from closing in on leaders Arsenal.
The win was Howe’s 100th victory in charge of United and gave the hosts confidence for when they played City in the Carabao Cup two months later. But City came through that test all too comfortably, with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Newcastle United 1-0 Manchester City

Striker Aleksander Isak scored the only goal of the match when the Magpies hosted City in the Carabao Cup third round.
The prospect of a fourth-round tie against Manchester United seemed unlikely as Newcastle spent the first 45 minutes almost entirely on the back foot. But the introduction of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon from the bench at half-time transformed the Magpies.
Joelinton set up Isak to slot home eight minutes after the restart. City huffed and puffed, but a Rico Henry shot which flew just wide was as close as they came to an equaliser.

City looked set for a routine Premier League victory when Sergio Aguero scored after just 24 seconds. Even a controversial decision to disallow a second goal by the Spaniard - Kevin de Bruyne having been deemed to have taken a free-kick too quickly – looked unlikely to derail the reigning champions.
But in a breathless second half, the Magpies equalised in the 66th minute through Salomon Rondon. And then Matt Ritchie put them ahead from the spot after Sean Longstaff was fouled in the box by Fernandinho in the 78th minute, before volleying a corner flag in celebration.

Manchester City 0-2 Newcastle United
October 24, 2014
Newcastle’s last away win at the Etihad came a whopping 12 years ago in the League Cup when Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko scored to knock the holders out of the competition.
Despite manager Alan Pardew playing an inexperienced side, the Magpies took the lead in the sixth minute before a Fabricio Coloccini-inspired defence weathered the inevitable City storm. At one point, the curly-haired defender cleared the ball onto the frame of his own goal.
But a rare Sissoko goal solidified the win for Newcastle, and the victory was Pardew’s third consecutive win in all competitions.

City went into this Premier League match winless in three games, whilst Newcastle had just beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 away from home.
Good work by Alan Shearer and Lee Bowyer set up Michael Owen to give the home side the lead after just 18 minutes. But although Owen saw two other chances go begging, United were lucky to hold on to their lead.
Future Magpies striker Antoine Sibierski missed several good chances as City regularly threatened Shay Given’s goal. But Graeme Souness’s side held on for a win which put them into the top half of the table above rivals Sunderland.
