‘Ultimately…’ – Graham Smyth defends Daniel Farke’s harsh stance on £10m Leeds United star

Leeds United

The summer leading up to this season at Leeds United was a very interesting one. There were many decisions made on the squad that won promotion from the Championship

So when Patrick Bamford was left back at Thorp Arch, everyone knew what was coming. The veteran striker eventually parted ways with the club after his contract was mutually terminated. Farke also made some other huge squad decisions like bringing back Jack Harrison and choosing to let Mateo Joseph leave on loan.

After the first week of the season, Largie Ramazani was left out of the squad. It was on the day of the Arsenal clash that Farke revealed he gave the green light for the Belgian to leave.

Graham Smyth defends Largie Ramazani transfer deal

The winger had an impact in his first game at Valencia as he gave an assist, but after that he was abysmal. A mixture of injuries and poor performances had him on the bench for a long period of time. However, Ramazani has scored twice in the last few weeks, prompting discussions over whether it was a good decision to loan him out.

Graham Smyth has spoken in support of Daniel Farke’s decision, saying the decision by the coach is final:

“For me, the fact he can strike a ball so sweetly in and around 25 yards and turn nothing into something, but that was a wonderful finish, fantastic goal, but ultimately, if a manager’s not having a player, he’s not having a player, and he’s not going to get match action and match minutes.” Smyth said on the Inside Elland Road podcast.

“You could say, whose place is he going to take in the squad? It hasn’t gone brilliantly for him in La Liga; he hasn’t had the game involvement that he’d like or the end product that he’d like.

“Maybe that goal is going to be the start of a turning point where he can finish this season strongly, and that would be great for him and great for Leeds as well.”

Leeds United made the right decision

For all the arguments that could have been made for Ramazani, Daniel Farke was right to make that decision. He is a quality player that can make moments happen, but there is just so much more he needs to add to his game to be a regular in this Leeds United team. Ramazani’s stint at Valencia will be key to his future at Elland Road; either he does enough to be signed by the Spanish club or he returns to Elland Road. And his return will be difficult considering how players have now gone further up the pecking order in his absence. Time will tell if this signing was a good one by the 49ers, but for now it is not looking great.
