Łukasz Fabiański has revealed he is edging closer to full fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Speaking to WP SportoweFakty, the 40-year-old goalkeeper opened up about his recovery process and his determination to get back involved before the end of the campaign.

Fabiański initially left West Ham at the end of last season when his contract expired. Despite receiving interest from Everton and the chance to rejoin Legia Warszawa on a free transfer, he opted to remain in London. When Mads Hermansen’s early-season performances failed to convince, the Hammers brought Fabiański back in September.

He was named on the bench for the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham but has not featured in a matchday squad since, having been sidelined through injury.

Now, however, progress is being made.

“For now, I’m training at 80–90%. I still need to strengthen my quadriceps on my right leg. I’ve returned to training with the other goalkeepers, almost at full strength, and I’m slowly rejoining the whole team. There are still areas where I feel like I’m lagging behind, especially in the weight room,” Fabiański explained.

And he isn’t ruling out a return before the season concludes.

“I want to be in the best possible condition, and who knows what will happen. I hope my health will allow me to return to the level I want. Of course, my role has changed in recent years.”

The Polish veteran also shed light on how the problem occurred — and it wasn’t through a dramatic collision or awkward fall.

“It happened in training. Not even after an intervention, a jump, a fall, or a run. I made a turn, a dynamic change of direction, and one of my discs popped, which started pressing on a nerve in my leg, quite severely. I had to wait for my quadriceps to respond appropriately.

“After undergoing a series of tests, including an MRI, I saw that my spine was indeed showing the wear and tear of all those seasons. But I don’t regret it.”

With West Ham locked in a survival battle, Fabiański’s experience and leadership could prove invaluable — even if only around the dressing room.

At 40, he may no longer be first choice, but having a steady, respected presence available for the final stretch could make a difference. And if he does manage to pull on the gloves again this season, it would be a welcome boost at a crucial time.
