‘Almost forgotten’ – Player’s injury issues a growing problem for Brighton

Evan Ferguson

Rome, Italy September 21, 2025: Matias Soule, Evan Ferguson of Roma celebrate victory 1-0 at end of the Serie A Enilive 2025-2026 football derby match SS Lazio and AS Roma at Olympic Stadium.

In the first half of the season, Sport Witness closely monitored the situation of Brighton loanee Evan Ferguson.

During his spell at AS Roma, the striker’s fitness has constantly been a cause for concern. There was annoyance at the club about issues around his weight.

Ferguson also played for Ireland despite an injury and this didn’t impress many at Roma. Considerations were being made about sending him back to the Amex.

Now, similar issues are cropping up again for the Brighton player, who hasn’t played in Serie A since January 10th.

Ferguson seeking fitness help

Il Romanista report the 21-year-old’s injury worries are mounting.

As a result, he is ‘almost forgotten’ in Rome. Despite him being handed an individual training routine, things haven’t changed for the better.

Now, Ferguson has sought help from Brighton. He flew to England recently to speak to medics at the Seagulls about his injuries. The Ireland international wanted to assess all possible scenarios and whether he may need surgery.

That possibility has been ruled out but it will only depend on whether he gets better or not.

Specifically, Ferguson is said to be in an ‘extremely fragile’ condition. This has left him on he fringes of Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who has seen the player sustain four separate ankle sprains this season.

From bad to worse for Brighton player

Earlier in the season, the striker faced issues around adaptation under Gasperini. He started well but didn’t score until the end of November in a game against Cremonese.

That has never proved enough. Now, Roma have Donyell Malen and he is thriving while playing upfront.

This should suggest that Ferguson’s time at Roma is already up and injuries ended any chance of his revival. That is quite unfortunate as Gasperini usually brings more out of underperforming attackers. Now, fitness problems seem to have become a pattern for the Ireland international.
