United legend Carrick briefly played under Moyes after the 62-year-old Scotsman succeeded the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford dugout back in 2013.

Carrick now finds himself in the Old Trafford hot seat after returning to the Premier League club, with the Red Devils turning to the 44-year-old former midfielder.

United sacked Ruben Amorim as Red Devils boss in January and the 41-year-old Portuguese coach’s 14-month reign at Old Trafford finally came to an end.

Benjamin Sesko came off the bench and scored a crucial injury-time equaliser in United’s 1-1 Premier League draw against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Moyes suggested that the way that Carrick has “freshened up” the Red Devils’ players and United fans is the key difference to Ruben Amorim’s managerial reign.

“I don’t think that there are any player changes, that’s for sure,” he said, as per BBC Sport.

“It’s roughly the same players that Ruben [Amorim] had. I think Michael [Carrick] has come in and done a brilliant job, I think he has freshened up the players and supporters as well.”

The Carrick ‘touch’ to United has been enough to show a massive shift in how the Red Devils can approach matches compared with the ill-fated Amorim era.

The Middlesbrough head coach has worked with what is at his disposal and Carrick has been pragmatic with his tactics, unlike the limited tactical range of Amorim.

Even shifting Bruno Fernandes from the two-man pivot in Amorim’s tactical system for United to the No 10 role under Carrick has had a massive impact for the club.

Outside of individual or collective United first-team players, the aura around Carrick and the sentiment around Red Devils supporters had been noticeably different.

There is a clear shift in optimism from United supporters about the Red Devils’ chances against an opposition team compared with the uncertainty under Amorim.
