The Norwich City striker had been linked with a move to the Premier League in January amid reported interest from West Ham and Leeds United.
West Ham and Leeds United are set to see any remaining hopes of securing a summer transfer move for January target Josh Sargent handed a fatal blow with the Norwich City talisman agreeing a move to the MLS.
The 25-year-old hasn’t played for Norwich City since the start of January amid a fallout with the club. The Mail reports that the striker felt he was ‘disrespected’ during a meeting with club bosses.
The American had been pushing for a move to Toronto FC for his family’s best interest and explained that to the club following a December approach from the MLS outfit. However, it’s believed that a remark made by Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper did not sit well with Sargent.
At the time, West Ham and Leeds United were also linked with the player. The Hammers went into the January window in desperate need of attacking reinforcements and eventually signed Taty Castellanos and Pablo.
Football Insider claims that the Hammers had a £20 million bid rejected for Sargent by Norwich City in December. Meanwhile, TeamTALK carried reports of Leeds United and Sunderland interest late into January.
Norwich City agree £15.5 million deal with Toronto FC
Now, Norwich City have finally reached a £15.5 million agreement with Toronto FC which will allow the player to make his move to the MLS. The Canaries have signed 21-year-old Australian forward Mohamed Toure from Randers FC in Denmark for £2.6 million as a potential replacement.
Sargent scored 56 goals in 157 games for Norwich City and had netted seven times this season in the Championship - five of those coming in the opening four fixtures of the campaign.
Speaking about the talisman in August, former Canaries boss Liam Manning said: “His record speaks for itself – I think he is the best Championship striker. He was first class in how he led the line and long may it continue.”
