West Ham told they can sign “fantastic” Italy international this summer for just £17.5 million

West Ham’s biggest issue this season has been painfully clear: defence.

Only one Premier League side has conceded more goals, a record that has left the Hammers flirting dangerously with the drop for much of the campaign.

January saw the arrival of Axel Disasi on loan in an attempt to steady things, and while he has added some presence, there is still uncertainty over whether his move will become permanent.

With long-term stability at the back now a priority, attention is already turning to the summer — and a new name has emerged who could be available at a cut-price fee.

Recent reports have linked West Ham with Federico Gatti, and fresh developments suggest a deal may be attainable for around €20 million (£17.5m).

The Juventus centre-back has attracted enquiries from multiple clubs, including the Hammers and Nottingham Forest.

According to Italian outlet TuttoSport, Gatti’s standing in Turin has diminished, and the Serie A giants would be willing to sanction a sale if their valuation is met.

Interest is not limited to England. AC Milan previously explored both a swap deal and a loan move for the Italy international during the January window, without success.

Meanwhile, French side Olympique Lyonnais are reported to have stepped up their pursuit, with initial contacts already established between the clubs and discussions held with the player’s representatives.

Gatti’s reduced prominence under Luciano Spalletti has opened the door for suitors — and West Ham are firmly in the mix.

What Gatti Could Bring

Although no longer an automatic starter at Juventus, Gatti remains an experienced and accomplished defender with international pedigree for Italy.

Former Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri once labelled him “fantastic”, praising his adaptability and willingness to learn.

Gatti is known for his aerial dominance, strong man-to-man marking and willingness to put his body on the line — traits that would not go amiss in a West Ham side that has too often looked vulnerable in both boxes.

Tactically, he is comfortable operating in either a back three or a traditional back four, offering flexibility for Nuno Espírito Santo. While there have been occasional doubts about his distribution under pressure, at £17.5 million he would represent relatively low risk in today’s market.

He may not arrive as a marquee signing, but as a robust squad option — or even a partner to build around — Gatti could prove smart business if West Ham are serious about tightening up at the back next season.
