Jacob Murphy has at least tasted the sensation of scoring a goal at the Etihad Stadium - but now he wants to savour what it would be like to beat Man City.

It was back in 2018 when Murphy skipped through the to clip the ball over the Brazil superstar for his first Newcastle goal. His last goal came in Baku this week when he put the lid on the 6-1 victory over Qarabag in the Champions League.

Murphy has 24 goals to his name in a black and white shirt and rather than feeling daunted tonight he is up for the challenge and knows he can get more.

When asked by Chronicle Live about the Etihad moment: "The dink over Ederson. I remember it like it was yesterday, eight years ago.

"But we’re in a good moment right now. The confidence is high, belief is high, we always trust in the process and the process is bearing fruit right now. The last three games is the confidence boost to show that it is there and what we’re capable of."

Newcastle have more recent memories of playing Man City after their run in the Carabao Cup ended with a 5-1 aggregate defeat. But Murphy pointed to the fact that United should have made things a lot closer after squandering big chances against the Citizens.

He said: "I’m not forgetting that when we went to City in the League Cup, we could have scored six goals. So it’s there for us, and we have to earn the right before we can take it.

"We’ll go there to show our best version of ourselves. We gave a great account of ourselves in the second half of that second leg. I know we can really hurt them.

"Although the tie might have been gone by then, we showed a good account of ourselves. That’s how we have to attack it come Saturday."
