Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has been accused of committing a sackable offence by telling Eagles fans to “stay humble” in an extraordinary swipe at travelling supporters. Glasner, who is leaving Selhurst Park at the end of the season and has been linked with the Manchester United job, was subjected to a brutal chant by his own fans after a 1-1 UEFA Conference League draw at Zrinjski Mostar.

Palace fans sang “sacked in the morning” to Glasner as they slumped to a disappointing draw in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They have won just one match in the last 15, with Glasner firing back at the travelling contingent. "They can say and sing whatever they want," Glasner said. "I know what I am doing.

"It would have been quite easy for me to step back earlier, [I had] many opportunities to be honest. I didn't do it. I felt responsible for the team - especially for the players."

Those comments have caused quite a stir, with the Sky Sports Soccer Saturday panel particularly unhappy with how Glasner has conducted himself.

Former Palace striker Clinton Morrison said: “The way you’re [Glasner] acting is not right. It still could be a good season for Palace, finish in the top half of the table and win the Conference League.

“There’s a lot of people that would want to take that job, they are one of the favourites at the moment, but he is a man that is looking like he has had enough. I am surprised at that, having met him loads of times, but maybe the time has come.”

Kris Boyd then added: “I think he needs to be really, really careful. A lot of the time you end up in a job because there’s tough times at that club, that’s usually what happens when a manager gets removed.

“Now all of a sudden, it looks like when the going gets tough, right now, his behaviour… the players must be thinking: ‘We’ve got a manager that OK it’s announced he’s going to leave’, but he’s got to go on the training field and demand the best from them.

“He’s not giving the club the best. That interview alone should be a sacking offence, straight away, bang.

“This has been on the slide for a while now and you see there, that interview is a sacking offence alone.”

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood agreed with Boyd and Morrison, claiming that Glasner has “got too big for his boots” and that Palace chairman Steve Parish “should have drawn a line under it there” and axed Glasner, but cited a lack of available replacements as the reason why Glasner is still in a position.

Such a reaction is a striking warning to Manchester United, who reportedly have Glasner on a shortlist of possible head coaches for next season, with Michael Carrick leading the Red Devils until the end of the campaign.
