Manchester City 2-1 Newcastle United player ratings: Here’s how Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon, Anthony Elanga and co have fared.
Newcastle United are losing 2-1 against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening - here are the player ratings from the match so far.
The Magpies went into the game looking for a fourth successive win away from home but well aware that they have never won in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City went in front inside the opening quarter-hour as Nico O’Reilly drilled an edge-of-the-box effort into the bottom left corner of the goal to wrap up a swift attacking move.
But the home side’s lead lasted less than 10 minutes as Lewis Hall scored his first goal of the season with a deflected strike from the edge of the box to make it 1-1. It was Newcastle’s first Premier League goal at the Etihad Stadium since 2018.
The Magpies couldn’t keep things tight after drawing level as City went back in front minutes later with O’Reilly heading in his second of the game from Erling Haaland’s cross.
Dan Burn thought he’d equalised just before half-time with a header but was denied by the offside flag as City led 2-1 at the break.

Nick Pope - 5
Will have been disappointed not to keep out O’Reilly’s opener despite getting a hand to it. Rooted to the spot for the second.
Kieran Trippier - 5
Couldn’t get back effectively to stop Man City’s opening goal. Beaten in the air for the second though wasn’t helped by O’Reilly not being tracked. Has played some good balls forward to release Elanga.
Malick Thiaw - 6
Made a good block to put the ball out for a corner at the front post. Headed over a decent opportunity from Kieran Trippier’s cross.
Dan Burn - 5
Booked early on and struggled to impose himself on the game after that. Dragged out of position for City’s opening goal. Headed the ball in but was unfortunate to be denied by the offside flag after being pushed.
Lewis Hall - 7
Got his reward for pulling the trigger to make it 1-1 midway through the first half. Showed good moments on the ball but trying to do too much at times.
Sandro Tonali - 5
Inconsistent on and off the ball as Man City controlled possession. Put a good ball in for Burn to head in, only for the linesman’s flag to rule it out.
Jacob Ramsey - 6
Showed good pace and strength to nick the ball off Antoine Semenyo. The pick of Newcastle’s midfield.
Joe Willock - 5
Played on the left and had a tame shot at goal easily saved. Defensively lacking.
Anthony Elanga - 5
Was an outlet with his pace down the right on the break, but lacked cutting edge. Didn’t notice the danger as O’Reilly waltzed into the box to head in his second.
Nick Woltemade - 5
Playing in a deeper role once again. Let Antoine Semenyo past him too easily in the build-up to City’s second. Had some smart touches.
Anthony Gordon - 6
Had a decent effort saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma shortly after City’s opening goal. Caused problems and worked hard up front.
