Newcastle United were on the wrong side of another officiating decision

Newcastle United were left fuming after more VAR and referee controversy in their game against Manchester City.

Seven days on from Chris Kavanagh's woeful officiating performance against Aston Villa, which saw the ref and his assistant miss a number of blatant indiscretions with no VAR being used, the Magpies were the victims of another incident at the Etihad.

Newcastle were trailing against Man City in the closing stages of the first half after two Nico O'Reilly goals had cancelled out a Lewis Hall strike, when they were awarded a free kick in the City half.

Sandro Tonali curled the ball into the box, and Dan Burn rose high to flick home a header, beating goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to the ball.

However, the goal was quickly ruled offside by the official who raised his flag. Replays, though, showed that while Burn was in an offside position, it was only because he had been shoved by home defender Ruben Dias.

TNT Sports co-commentator Glenn Hoddle was left bemused by the incident. He said: "Ruben Dias pushes him into an offside position. That's the difference.

"It's interesting. If you push or shove someone like that anywhere else you expect it's a foul.

"It has affected the game. He's pushed him into an offside position. It's a foul on him and put him in an offside position."

VAR confirmed the decision as being offside, meaning Newcastle went in at the interval behind.
