Manchester City 2-1 Newcastle United player ratings: Here’s how Lewis Hall, Anthony Gordon, Nick Woltemade an co fared at the Etihad Stadium.

The Magpies went into the game looking for a fourth successive win away from home but well aware that they have never won in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City went in front inside the opening quarter-hour as Nico O’Reilly drilled an edge-of-the-box effort into the bottom left corner of the goal to wrap up a swift attacking move.

But the home side’s lead lasted less than 10 minutes as Lewis Hall scored his first goal of the season with a deflected strike from the edge of the box to make it 1-1. It was Newcastle’s first Premier League goal at the Etihad Stadium since 2018.

The Magpies couldn’t keep things tight after drawing level as City went back in front minutes later with O’Reilly heading in his second of the game from Erling Haaland’s cross.

Dan Burn thought he’d equalised just before half-time with a header but was denied by the offside flag as City led 2-1 at the break.

Newcastle saw more of the ball in the second half but struggled to create too many openings to get back into the game as Gianluigi Donnarumma was barely tested in the City goal.

Here are the Newcastle United player ratings from the match...

Nick Pope - 5

Will have been disappointed not to keep out O’Reilly’s opener despite getting a hand to it. Rooted to the spot for the second. Made a couple of good saves late on to keep the score at 2-1.

Kieran Trippier - 6

Couldn’t get back effectively to stop Man City’s opening goal. Beaten in the air for the second but wasn’t helped by O’Reilly not being tracked. Played some good balls forward to release Elanga. Booked.

Malick Thiaw - 7

Made a good block to put the ball out for a corner at the front post. Headed over a decent opportunity from Kieran Trippier’s cross. Defended well.

Dan Burn - 7

Booked early on but still managed to put his weight about as the game wore on. Dragged out of position for City’s opening goal. Headed the ball in but was unfortunate to be denied by the offside flag after being pushed. Made several good challenges and blocks to stop Man City running away with the game. Recovered well after a shaky start.

Lewis Hall - 8

Got his reward for pulling the trigger to make it 1-1 midway through the first half. Showed good moments of quality on the ball but trying to do too much at times.

Sandro Tonali - 5

Inconsistent on and off the ball as Man City controlled possession. Put a good ball in for Burn to head in, only for the linesman’s flag to rule it out.

Jacob Ramsey - 7

Showed good pace and strength to nick the ball off Antoine Semenyo. Released Elanga with a great through ball in the second half. The pick of Newcastle’s midfield.

Joe Willock - 5

Played on the left and had a tame shot at goal easily saved in the first half. Defensively lacking. Booked.

Anthony Elanga - 5

Was an outlet with his pace down the right on the break, but lacked cutting edge and was let down by his poor decision-making. Didn’t notice the danger as O’Reilly waltzed into the box to head in his second.

Nick Woltemade - 5

Played in a deeper role once again. Let Antoine Semenyo past him too easily in the build-up to City’s second. Had some smart touches and battled well but ultimately struggled out of possession.

Anthony Gordon - 6

Had a decent effort saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma shortly after City’s opening goal. Caused problems and worked hard up front before fading in the second half.

Substitutes

Joelinton - 6

On for Woltemade 60: Brought some bite back to Newcastle’s midfield following his introduction. Booked.

Harvey Barnes - 5

On for Willock 60: Pushed off the ball on a few occasions. Saw en effort saved deep in stoppage time. Booked.

Jacob Murphy - n/a

On for Elanga 78
