Liverpool will be aiming to take a significant stride towards guaranteeing Champions League qualification when they face Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon. The Reds have been hindered by inconsistency this campaign, and manager Arne Slot understands they cannot afford to surrender many more points in the battle for European competition next term.

Despite their difficult spell towards the end of last year, Liverpool have suffered just two Premier League defeats this calendar year. Bournemouth overcame the Reds in late January, whilst Manchester City delivered a rare Anfield setback to Slot's team earlier this month.

The Reds' improvement in results has also been helped by Mohamed Salah's return from the Africa Cup of Nations. Today's Liverpool news addresses Salah's future on Merseyside, whilst a legend's comeback to the club has been confirmed.

Mohamed Salah's future

There was genuine worry amongst numerous Liverpool supporters that Salah might never represent the club again following his contentious post-match remarks after a fixture against Brighton in December. Salah suggested he had been "thrown under the bus" by the club.

Following his omission from the starting XI for a third successive match, Salah confronted Slot, declaring he didn't have a "relationship" with the Reds manager. That unpleasant episode now appears to have been resolved, with Liverpool's reliance on a fit and firing Salah stronger than ever.

During the seven matches Salah missed whilst representing his country in Morocco at AFCON, Liverpool managed just 11 goals, four of which came against League One outfit Barnsley. That contrasts sharply with the 20 scored in the equivalent number of fixtures since the 33-year-old rejoined the squad.

Salah has found the net twice and registered four assists in his seven outings since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations. Whilst the winger was subject to January transfer speculation, he instead remained at Liverpool and appears to have recaptured his form of late, with Liverpool reaping the rewards and undoubtedly hoping for another campaign with their talisman.

Attention from Saudi Arabia is expected to continue this summer, given he once again enters the final 12 months of his contract on Merseyside. It was during the summer of 2023 when representatives from the league tabled a £150million offer to Liverpool that was emphatically rejected.

Yet that shouldn't concern supporters. Salah delivered arguably his finest ever season for Liverpool throughout 2024/25 when he was also within the final year of his Anfield contract.

It would be foolish to wager against Salah rediscovering his peak form before the campaign concludes and witnessing the man the Kop dubs the 'Egyptian King' in red once more next season.

Thiago return

Liverpool icon Thiago is set to return to Anfield for a match that will see numerous former Liverpool stars face off against a Borussia Dortmund legends team. Liverpool signed Thiago from Bayern Munich in 2020 for £26million.

The Spanish midfielder had four seasons with the Reds, making 98 appearances and netting three goals. He played a significant role as the club clinched both the FA Cup and League Cup during the 2021-22 season.

Thiago, now 34, retired two years ago and is scheduled to participate for the first time in the charity match, which is set for Saturday, March 28. Despite his time on Merseyside being marred by injury, Thiago's connection with the fans was unmistakable.

Upon leaving Liverpool he said: "Thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of this city, this club and this community. The continuous support I have received since day one has been incredible: Anfield cheering, the Kop chanting... amazing, overwhelming."

Thiago will join a line-up of players for the match, including legends such as Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Martin Skrtel, Vladimir Smicer, Natasha Dowie, and goalkeepers Jerzy Dudek and Pepe Reina.
